Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Remember the infomercial advertising the special sun glasses which supposedly heightened the ability of the golfer to read the contours of putting greens? The ability to read the speed and the break of putts is one of the most amazing skills of a PGA tour professional. It is an art to see the exactness of the read considering the slope, type of surface, length of the grass blades, bend of the blades, and any effect of moisture or dryness. This skill is what separates those who play Thursday and Friday from those who get to play the weekends. Discerning the will of God in the life of a Christian is vital to our spiritual growth and success. The key to discerning His will for our lives is being separate from the world and its great pull. Being sanctified means not being succumbed by worldly standards and the desires to satisfy our flesh. The “if it feels good, do it” standard of living is detrimental to our spiritual well-being. The “renewing of your mind” mentioned in the scripture above was initiated by our acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior. The Holy Spirit transforms our “want to’s”. We as free moral agents have the ability and freedom to act on own volition. Eternal salvation and the forgiveness of our merciful God confounds the world. The naysayer will question the believer by asking, “how can you be saved one day, go out and do sin A, B and C, yet still be saved?” The world does not understand the transformation of the believer. Our desires and our understanding of sin’s consequences have changed. The believer still has the internal struggle from the flesh and the temptation to make it happy. Salvation saved our soul. Our flesh and mind were not saved and we still come short of cross daily because of their vulnerabilities. The internal struggle between spirit and flesh remains a constant in our lives. The polarized sun glasses supposedly block out the unnecessary optics and highlight the key areas of the green to our brain. When allowed and given the freedom, the Holy Spirit does the same for our lives. It gives us the ability to block out what is of the world and highlight the impact of the spirit! If we have trouble reading the path and speed of our life, it’s time to make sure we have on our spiritual “son”glasses!
