For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
I enjoy walking the golf course instead of the feeling of rushing through 18 holes with a cart. The few times I have had the privilege of a caddie it was truly exhilarating. The feeling of walking down the fairways without the burden of a golf bag or pushing a cart strategically to the exit of the green is one of total freedom.
Paul understood the freedom given by having the Holy Spirit. It is no mistake “sin” is spoken in terms of “wages” and “salvation” is described as a “gift.” Similarly in Galatians 5:1, he went even further and taught, “[s]tand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Without Christ, the sinner is a slave to sin and lives in bondage to the lusts of the flesh which can never be satisfied. Being free from the wages of sin, does not make the believer free of sin or free to sin. Having Christ means there is no further condemnation of sin. Paul wrote in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” We are one with He who has already paid the ultimately sin sacrifice. No other sacrifice will ever be required and if we are one with Christ through salvation, we are free indeed!
